The Design/Build project consists new renovations and improvements to this 25 year old physical fitness center. New construction included 21,000 square feet consisting of Community Use Multi-Purpose Rooms, Weight Rooms, Cardio Rooms, Locker Rooms and a large Lobby / Reception area. Major renovations were also performed throughout the existing facility including structural steel evaluation and remediation, heating/cooling plant replacement, ventilation improvements in the existing pool area and existing Locker Room renovations.
Midway through the project, Purcell Construction’s team voluntarily, with no additional charge to the Owner, accelerated the project completion by 60 days to accommodate a request to have the facility available for Fort Drum soldiers who were returning from a 2 year deployment in Afghanistan. The accelerated project deadline was accomplished, and an award was presented by General Freakley to Purcell Construction’s Team to express appreciation for our efforts in making the facility available for the returning troops and their families.
During design, special consideration was given to children’s activity areas and traffic flow. Administrative offices were located off a large reception assembly area which has a central skylight that allows for reduced energy consumption and family friendly gathering space. The assembly area is used to promote activities and programs offered by the Fort Drum Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation Office. Beardsley Design Associates provided design services for this project.
